Year-round heartworm prevention will help your dog live a longer, healthier life.

Heartworm is a parasite that is transmitted via mosquitoes. In BC, the area most impacted is the Okanagan. Although we have a low incidence in the lower mainland, prevention is easy. Should you have any concerns or travel with your pets, please contact our office to discuss options for prevention.

If a dog has heartworms, what symptoms should I look for?

The most common symptom of heartworm is a mild cough. Your dog may also exhibit exercise intolerance, lethargy, and a reduced appetite.

How does a dog get heartworms?

The mosquito plays an essential role in the heartworm life cycle. It is through the bite of an infected mosquito that heartworm is transmitted. Since there is no way to tell if a mosquito is infected, prevention is the most important step to stopping your dog from getting infected.

What are the treatment options for heartworms?

Prevention is the key to treating heartworm. There are several options to choose from, and our staff would be happy to help you select the one that works best for you. Plus, most of these products help to prevent against other parasites as well, including fleas!

Why is recovery for heartworm treatment so challenging?

As heartworms invade the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels, treatment can have serious risks, depending on the severity of the infestation.
