We know that some pet parents struggle with their cat’s weight. Many cats are kept inside for their safety or because owners live in condos or apartments, which can lead to a decrease in exercise levels and consequently more cats with weight concerns. This can be of particular concern, as it puts a cat at risk of medical conditions, such as diabetes and joint pain. We have many solutions that can help, from feeding your cat the correct amount to using the right amount of rewards and specialty diet foods.

How do I know if my cat is overweight?

Like people, the number on a scale does not always mean we are overweight. An ideal body score is the most accurate way for our staff to determine if your cat is overweight. When considering your cat’s overall health, we will look at his or her actual body weight as well as how much fat is visible over the rib cage and if they still have a waist.

How can I help my cat lose weight?

There are a number of options that we can recommend based on your cat’s needs. It can range from ideas to increase exercise (moving the food dish, incorporating climbing furniture into your home or having you cat “hunt” the kibble), to a special diet which can aid in weight loss (canned food alone may help, as it can help your cat feel full).
